Recorded January and February 2013.
For this, the 14th Warhorse album, I decided not to use any loops for the backing tracks as I had done for a handful of the songs on Year of the Dragon (drums notwithstanding).
For the first six tracks I started by using Finale to make midi files but thereafter I found it was more efficiently to just “draw notes” in Cubase directly. Set the World on Fire is a bold step forward from Year of the Dragon as I became more adept at using Cubase. The songs are diverse in style and the project only took five weeks to create.
1. You Only Live to Die (Jan 9)
A tribute to James Bond. Uses audio clips I found from various James Bond films online.
2. Under the Sun (Jan 14)
A techno piece about pretentiousness of celebs.
3. Sea Angel (Jan 16)
A sea chanty of sorts.
4. Set Me Free (Jan 17)
An anthemic love song.
5. Fake It (Jan 22)
A funky rap about trying to make a better impression.
6. Lonely Together (Jan 22)
Emotional song about loneliness and empathy.
7. Pyromaniac (Jan 23)
An edgy techno piece.
8. Scheherezade (Jan 28)
Featuring verses in 5/4 time, this prog-rock tale of the legendary story-teller.
9. Saturday Night (Jan 28)
An energetic pop song about having a crush.
10. Leap of Faith (Jan 30)
A sort of neo-prog mix of rock and techno. A song about taking chances.
11. Remember (Feb 6)
A soulful sad break-up ballad.
12. Don’t Stop (Feb 7)
A gospel flavoured song about breaking the chains that hold us back.
13. Underground (Feb 8)
A retro-techno tune about a generic celeb junky.
14. Obvious (Feb 9)
A sort punk/reggae love song. I created a drum loop from a sample of Obvious Child by Paul Simon.
15. Home is Where (Feb 13)
A song about being far from a loved one that turns into a Celtic jam.
