My best guest is that I recorded this album in July 2007. (Except Follow Me, which is from October 2005)
The project is called Finale because all the backing tracks were created using that software. I had done the work on Finale starting in Fall 2005 and into 2007. Basically recording this album was a simple matter of singing along to those tracks.
In a similar vein to Kyrie, Finale is effectively a demo album of songs that were in consideration for inclusion on my second CD, Inspiration ,which would be released in February 2011. (Though a few were late candidates for inclusion on Illumination). Funny enough when I did Finale, it was still months before my first CD was released.
The first five tracks were composed in 2005, the next five were composed 2006. The next three used backing tracks created by Armando Prini though in the end they are not what was used on my CDs. The remainder of the album are hymns by other composers using Finale backing tracks.
1. Follow Me (Oct ’05)
This would be the final song recorded using the Roland gear. I recorded it when I was considering it for Illumination. Ultimately some of the lyrics did get reused in the first half of the song Inspiration and bridge of If I’m in Your Heart.
2. 5/4
This short instrumental in 5/4 time composed in 2005 this was an early experiment in using Finale software.
3. Light In the Soul
An attempt at creating additional material for the Illumination album. This was a second attempt at this piece which had been the final section of the song Inspirations (from Circle Nine). The text is based on a Chinese proverb.
4. Ubi Caritas
Another failed attempt at creating additional material for Illumination. It was meant to be 4-part harmony (as heard by the instruments) but I found singing them all too challenging.
5. Praise To You
Based on a Japanese prayer. I created a short 4-part harmony piece for it but only sing two parts in this demo. The instruments play the rest. This was the last failed attempt to get a last minute add on to Illumination.
6. Hosanna
Written for Inspiration, but not used. Based on various parts of the mass.
7. Rejoice
Rejoice is based on psalm 118, usually heard on Easter Sunday.
8. Remain in My Love
The verses here are based on John 15:9-12, which is a gospel reading often used at weddings, though the song is a call for peace.
9. We Are One
The refrain borrows loosely from Ephesians 4:5 and Roman 12:5 and John 15:9 for the bridge.
10. Days of Innocence
This is about how sometimes we find ourselves at a point in our lives where we don’t seem to be where we think we should be or feel guilt for things we have done in the past. To some extent it is inspired by the prodigal son proverb.
11. Unity 2007
I had already recorded the studio version of this before making this retroactive demo. The backing tracks were work in progress version that featuring my own midi files with Armando’s upgrades to the bass and drums.
12. Be Light For Our Eyes
(David Haas)
Armando created these backing tracks though the version that ultimately appeared on Inspiration were by Alan Cranny.
13. Song of the Risen One
(David Haas)
Armando created these backing tracks though the version that ultimately appeared on Inspiration were by Alan Cranny.
14. Come Journey Come Worship
(David Haas / John Michael Talbot)
My first recording of my arrangement that combines Come and Journey with Me and Come Worship the Lord. I had also tried to if Table of Plenty combined well with either piece.
15. I Lift Up My Soul
(Tim Manion)
On my third CD I inserted the refrain into All Who Are Thirsty.
16. Rejoice With Joyful Song
(Gary Ault, Gary Daigle, Darryl Ducote)
I did this one a cappela because I can’t find sheet music with parts anywhere online.
17. Magnificat
(David Haas)
While I didn’t end up recording this one in the studio, I have featured it live.
18. Saving Power of God
(Roc O’Connor)
A good song, but decided it wasn’t right for the CD project.
19. Lift Up Your Hearts
(Roc O’Connor)
I didn’t record either O’Connor piece for my CDs. I do still think it would cool to do a version of this that sounds a bit like Sweet Home Alabama.
20. These Alone are Enough
(Dan Schutte)
I later recorded this on my second CD and that version became my most viewed video on youtube.
21. Table of Plenty
(Dan Schutte)
This was the second version of this song I made. Didn’t record it for my CDs but have performed it live.
